Recruiting Up For Success in Network Marketing!

It’s been said that network marketing is a personal development business disguised with products & services, however, I want to give you a better analogy after being involved in the industry for over a decade.  It’s really a sphere of influence business disguised with products and services.  I actually, got that from a million dollar earner Ken Dunn who I interviewed on one of my podcasts a few years ago.  I never heard anyone ever say it like that, but when he did – it made perfect sense.  This explained to me in one sentence why so many struggle just to sponsor a few people into the profession.  Another leader who was a mentor to me for a short time says it like this, “How you treat people today and in the past will determine how many people join you in your business”.  And that makes sense as I have seen many in my career with zero network marketing experience do well because they have a large network of people that they have built good relationships with over the years.  I’ve seen others with tons of experience struggle because they have burnt bridges with their network and are forced to go into the cold market (which can be really rough in the beginning).  I must add that I am not against cold marketing, but wouldn’t it be nice if everyone would not want to rush into it so fast.

This doesn’t mean that you cannot do network marketing if you don’t have a large network of people who admire you or like you, but what it does mean is that it will be a longer tougher road for you than it will be for the pastor, PTA Mom, Doctor, or realtor.

One thing I learned years ago from another million dollar income earner who I had the chance to work with on a daily basis for many months was that you need to look for people who are more talented than you.  Another term that has been used over and over again in our industry is to, “recruit up”.   That simply means you must look for good players and people with bad attitudes, poverty mindset, entitlement mindset are not going to get you to your goals.  I’m not saying to turn people away who are less talented, just don’t chase those people.  Put your energy into those people who would appear to be strong leaders or people who would appear to stand out in their circles.  Those are the people you want to go after.  You can build the orphanage later on after you’ve made a lot of money.

One thing I try to do whenever I am prospecting is to find about peoples past achievements – where did they go to school, have they ever owned a business, have they ever done sales, do they think long term or short term, are they in poverty or just broke.  I want to know what type of person I am going to be working with as these are people I’m going to be calling a few days a week and locking arms with.  I don’t want to lock arms with people who are going to bring me down, so when I go to recruit I am cherry picking those really nice looking cherries and throwing away the rest.

If you want to build a large network marketing organization you won’t be able to do on the backs of those that haven’t had some success in the past or those that have no friends.  It’s not impossible, but probably improbable.  So go out there and remember that network marketing isn’t just making sales, its building relationships and the better relationships you have and continue to build with the right people, the better your business will do.
